Flower: Staminate flowers borne on catkins. Pistillate flowers borne on spikes. Appearing February to May before the leaves.
Fruit: Acorns are 1/4 to 1/2 inch long, nearly round and yellow-green. Caps are thin and saucer-like with thin, tomentose, appressed scales.
Twig: Slender, hairless, red-brown in color with small, chestnut brown buds that are sharp-pointed. Terminal buds are multiple.
Bark: On young stems, smooth, gray and tight. Later forming thick, irregular ridges and deep furrows. Older stems are dark in color.
Form: A medium-sized tree that forms a dense oblong crown when open grown. Lower branches do not readily self-prune.
